Crochet Purse

 

Finished Size: 4½ in x 4½ ins (12cms x 12cms)

Materials: 4.5mm (Canadian/US #7) crochet
               hook or sized needed to obtain gauge

50g heavy worsted/aran weight yarn
      (label should read 18sts to 4ins (10cms)

Gauge: 16sc to 4ins (10cms)

Abbreviations:
ch - chain, sc - single crochet, dc - double crochet,
st(s) - stitch(es), sp - space
sc dec - single crochet decrease (put hook through
next stitch and pull up a loop, put hook through next stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over hook and pull through all three loops on hook)
dc dec - double crochet decrease (*yarn over hook, put hook through next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, repeat from* once more. Yarn over hook and pull through all three loops on hook)
Cluster - (*yarn over hook, put hook through next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and
pull through 2 loops on hook, repeat from* twice
more. Yarn over and pull through all four loops on hook)

 

Ch 20 loosely.
Row 1: Sc in 3rd ch from hook, sc in each ch (18sc).
Row 2: Ch 2 (keep this loose), sc in each sc to end (19sts including turning ch).
Row 3: Repeat Row 2.
Row 4: Ch 3, dc in each sc to end.
Row 5: Repeat Row 4.
Repeat Rows 2 - 5 six times more or until piece measures approx 9ins (23cms).

Purse Flap
Row 1: Ch 3, dc in front loop of next st and each st to end of row.
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in next st, miss next st, (3dc in next st, miss next 2 sts) 4 times, 3 dc in next st, miss next st, dc in next 2 sts.
Row 3: Ch 2, sc dec, sc to last 3 sts (13 scs), sc dec, sc in last st.
Row 4: Repeat Row 3 (11 scs between decreases).
Row 5: Repeat Row 3 (9 scs between decreases).
Row 6: (Buttonhole row) Ch 2, sc dec, sc in next 2 sts, ch 3, skip next 3sts, sc in next 2 sts, sc dec, sc in last st.
Row 7: Ch 2, sc dec, sc in next st, 3 sc in ch sp, sc in next st, sc dec, sc in last st.
Row 8: Ch 3, dc dec, cluster, dc dec, dc in last st.
Fasten off.

Handle
Ch 3, dc in third ch from hook.
Row 1: Ch 3, dc in top of dc. Turn.
Repeat Row to desired length.

Fold the beginning edge up approximately 4 ins (10cms), just below Row 1 of the Purse Flap. Sew the side seams together. Sew handle to purse, sew on button/ and block purse if necessary.
